Medical Arm Sling

A piece of fabric that is worn around one’s shoulder and neck to support a weak arm or hand. Commonly used following surgery, weakness or paralysis from stroke. Great for protecting one’s hand during transfers and ambulation.

Advantages

  • provides joint protection during transfers from bed to chair, chair to wheelchair, etc or during walks
  • prevents further injury to hand / arm

Disadvantages

  • using the sling too often during may be considered over protecting the hand/arm which often translates to not using the hand. This non use can prevent recovery and sometimes result in permanent disability
  • sling often worn incorrectly ie. With both straps around the neck which places strain on the neck muscles as your head is forced to look down by the weight of your hand/arm
